Established in 2022 in Oslo, Norway, by friends Camilla and Sarah, JOSEPHINE designs contemporary jewellery for the passionate soul, creating heirlooms for future generations.
We create comfortable and solid pieces that stand the test of time and we encourage everyday wear making our jewellery a part of life’s journey. The characters of silver and gold unfolds uniquely over time, evolving with each use, every line and scratch tells a story of a life well lived.
More than jewellery, JOSEPHINE embodies a philosophy of living boldly and authentically – being rebellious, relatable and alive.
VALUES
Our focus is quality products that last. When something is well-made, it doesn't need frequent updates. Our approach to sustainability is to create truly excellent items that people want to use for a lifetime and that will also withstand the test of time.
For the industry to become more sustainable as a whole, it needs to collectively slow down. We're accustomed to new things being churned out season after season, which has become a standard and a requirement set by the industry. We aim to normalize appreciating, using, and desiring items that have been on the market for a long time. We want to highlight that desiring something over time is a good thing, and making a conscious decision when purchasing a product is beneficial. For customers to have the time to make such a choice, the product must be available for longer and remain relevant, just as much this year as it was last year.
We will create new things, but we will do so because we have fresh ideas we want to bring to life, not because the industry demands constant new releases to stay relevant. We create new things on our own terms.
INSPIRATION
JOSEPHINE STUDIO was born from a desire to create a workplace and brand where quality and authenticity are central. In an industry characterized by stress, pressure, and perfectionism, we wanted to cultivate something that embraces a more playful and uncompromising life.
Our inspiration is Empress Joséphine Bonaparte. She was a pioneer of her time, known for her rebellious spirit. She defied conventions as both an empress and a woman, living her life to the fullest, without compromises.
Our JOSEPHINE also lives her life uncompromisingly. She is rebellious, sensitive, effortless, quirky, deeply relatable, and genuine.
Our first core collections, Rose Collection and Thorn Collection, are based on Joséphine Bonaparte's rebellious actions and interests. She had a deep affection for roses, and while Napoleon was away, she purchased Château de Malmaison to expand her rose garden, which today boasts over 250 species of roses.
Originally known as Rose until Napoleon gave her the name Joséphine, she imbued the rose with symbolic meaning. The rose resonates deeply in society, representing love, beauty, and desire. Its protective thorns remind us that imperfection and complexity are inherent in life, symbolizing diversity and resilience.
DESIGN
We design everything we create to be something you'll want to use every single day, for a lifetime. We firmly believe that beautiful design, comfort, and longevity go hand in hand: if something is beautiful, you'll want to use it daily; if it's comfortable, you can use it daily; and if it's high-quality, it will withstand daily use.
All our designs are created in-house in Oslo, and we don't stop until our jewellery feels almost weightless. Through a classic industrial design process, everything is drawn in 3D, 3D-printed for user testing, and revised based on feedback. We then send our finalized production drawings for manufacturing.
